908 Devices - Hazardous Material Vaporizer

908 Devices produces portable mass spectrometers that can be used by emergency first responders and military personnel to assess the chemical composition of potentially hazardous material. The company is seeking an accessory that will safely vaporize such material so that the mass spectrometer can quickly take readings and then be reused to test more samples. The proposed prototype is an airtight container with a porcelain crucible that sits on a heating element (0.1 ohm resistors). Temperature is monitored and controlled using a temperature sensor and an Arduino.
This project was done during my sophomore year at Boston University for an Introduction to Engineering Design course. This was the first design project I had done, and it involved a fair amount of machining, both manual and CNC. It also required circuits and controls knowledge, and I eventually took formal courses in both of these areas so this project was a good introduction to the topics.
